Des de gener 2002 aproximadament que tenia dominis, webs, etc. a un servidor sota la taula connectat amb ADSL de Telefonica amb IP fixe. En serio! (això sí, amb un SAI per la llum, RAID els discs per si un fallava, com va passar dos cops en els 8 anys, etc).

El desembre 2007 vaig canviar el servidor destartatalat per un ordinador decent. Es pot llegir aquí. Llàstima que no vaig fer fotos del primer ordinador, que al final era força impresionant.

Ara, maig 2012, ho he portat a un servidor Gandi VPS. Tenia dubtes de com aniria el blog amb només 256 MB de memòria RAM (tinc el més petit-econòmic de Gandi) però jo diria que va més ràpid que abans: les imatges van més ràpid, no tinc queixes de l’entrada/sortida de disc.

Per fer una avaluació digne diria que haig d’esperar un any: per veure l’estabilitat que ofereix i com solucionen possibles problemes.

Doncs això, si heu notat canvis a la velocitat no és casualitat

Així que ara enlloc d’anar a buscar la Web a Manresa aneu a París! Però en general està molt millor connectat.

En un altre apunt parlaré potser de canviar de lloc el servidor.

I asked in the linux-usb mailing list (question, see one of the relevant answers (from Alan Stern). In short: not possible. Using a USB hub it’s then maybe possible -some models only-. The answer includes a link to a small program to try to disable the port. I could disable the port, but the device had still power.

I still didn’t want to give up. I remembered that I bought, 2 years ago, a USB relay. Actually that one could be used it says with 220VAC/10A, so I could power on a heating or some big device.

I did a bit of very bad-done hardware work: I “broke” a USB cable, got the red inner-cable to pass through the relay. Then using one USB port I control the relay and I can switch on and off the other USB device like I wanted initially.

As you can see in the photo I broke too much the shield -because a confussion not directly related with the project-. Still, it works well with my dumb device and other devices.

Aquest cop parlaré breument de Meetup.com: és una Web on un es pot donar d’alta, posar els seus interessos (per exemple: excursionisme, ping pong, python, programari lliure, etc.) i posar una ciutat (Barcelona, Londres o llocs més petits, junt amb una distància).

Quan hi ha activitats de grups etiquetats que coincideixen amb els interessos que s’han posat a certa distància s’ens notifica.

Cada grup hi ha un llistat de gent, calendari, propers Meetups, es pot dir si s’hi anirà o no, gestiona pagaments (en cas que la trobada requereixi algun pagament), votacions de què tal ha anat, etc.

A Londres cada setmana hi ha unes 700 activitats. A vegades va bé fer una ullada, no per anar-hi però per tenir idees. Per exemple, anar al «chocolate festival»: bé, no cal anar-hi amb més gent, un hi pot anar sol (i menjar més xocolata?).

Com a grups curiosos, fa temps havia vist alguns com:

• Excursionisme per tímids. Deia que si un no s’havia atrevit a anar a altres grups d’excursionisme per ser massa tímid, aquest era el bo. No sé si la gent no es mira els ulls, van amb silenci, etc.
• Speed-dating (cites ràpides) en silenci. La gent seu a la taula i es mira uns minuts, i passen a la següent persona. Això sí, després parlen i socialitzen.

Python-Meetup-Barcelona s’organitza a aquesta Web. HackerNews Londres també, un grup de Ping pong de Londres que havia anat també, molts grups d’excursionisme. Així que si voleu fer alguna activitat o tan sols mirar és una bona Web.

Fa unes setmanes vaig veure aquest cartell al metro:

És fàcil perdre el portàtil, que el robin, que caigui i s’espatlli el disc, borrar sense voler, etc.

Si us plau: feu copies de seguretat! La manera més fàcil: un disc USB i copiar tot de tant en tant. O automatitzar-ho una mica.

Curiositat: fa mesos vaig somniar que em deixava el meu portàtil al tren. Tristament no m’el podien tornar: no hi tinc cap enganxina amb el nom o número de telèfon. Ho faré aviat! Em vaig despertar ben esverat. Això sí, estava tranquil al somni perquè tenia les copies de seguretat.

Some days, if Piccadilly Line has delays, I change in Finsbury Park. For some weeks, 1 or 2 years ago, I used to always change to Victoria line but I decided that it’s not worth. Now I change in case of delays or if I’m standing up and squeezed in the Piccadilly Line and/or the Victoria Line train is just there.

The TFL webpage allows to download the last month or two months travels using a CSV file (I’ll check for some API, etc.).

I did some quick stats to find the distribution of the time. The most interesting result of that period of time (between 15th February and 5th April, but I was 2 weeks away from London) is:

So, during that period:

• I did the travel in 23 minutes 2 times. Record time!
• Hard to read in that table, but the most common commuting time is 26 minutes.
• Once it took 39 minutes. Something was very screwed… (and another day it took longer because I used a bus, since Piccadilly Line was not working in my zone)
• I arrive 92% of the times in 31 minutes or less
• I could achieve a good punctuality mark planning 33 minutes of commuting time (96%!). More than that it’s really screwed and not worth planning for a standard day.

This is the final result… the frequency table for so short period of time is not a standard normal distribution as I was expecting, probably if I’d do during a longer period of time would look more standard.
